IRIS-Interactive Raw Material Information System
Access to Austria’s mineral resources and geoscientific data
A sustainable supply of raw materials requires reliable knowledge of domestic mineral deposits and indications of resources. The Interactive Raw Materials Information System (IRIS) provides public digital access to comprehensive geoscientific and raw materials data in Austria. By bringing relevant information together in one system, IRIS provides an important knowledge base for raw materials planning including exploration, spatial planning and research.
Quick Facts
How it works
IRIS brings together information on more than 5,700 mineral deposits and occurrences in Austria and links it to around 17,000 literature references. Users can explore mineral resources through interactive maps and access information on raw materials, mineralogy, geology, geological age and mining history. Geological, geochemical and airborne geophysical data layers provide additional context for assessing Austria’s raw material potential.
IRIS Construction Raw Materials also provides information on natural deposits of gravel, sand, clay and natural stone. These resources are grouped into raw material districts based on geological and qualitative criteria. This allows different types of geoscientific data to be combined and mineral resource potential to be systematically assessed.
The Big Picture
IRIS improves access to mineral resources data in Austria and expands knowledge of domestic deposits. Its consolidated geoscientific information supports raw materials planning, spatial planning including exploration, research and the exploration of potential future deposits.
As a digital information system, IRIS provides a sound data basis for assessing Austria’s raw material potential and supporting informed decision-making. It thereby contributes to the digitalisation of mining and to sustainable, long-term raw materials planning.
