How it works

BergIS consists of an internal application and a publicly accessible mining geoportal. The internal system stores the relevant data required under the Mineral Resources Act, including information on mining rights, authorised natural and legal persons, responsible persons and the geographical coordinates associated with each valid right.

The public geoportal displays different categories of mining rights on an interactive map, including exploration areas, mining licences, federally owned mineral resources, mining operating plans and exploration licences. Users can search by administrative units or specific attributes, access information on rights holders and mineral resources, and print map views. The data can also be integrated into external GIS applications through an OGC Web Map Service (WMS).

The browser-based system enables geographical coordinates to be visualised as polygons or circles and combines these spatial elements with the corresponding administrative data. The public portal is updated daily, while technical and organisational measures ensure a strong focus on data protection and security.

The Big Picture

BergIS supports the digitalisation of mining administration in Austria by bringing mining rights and related geospatial information together in a central system. Public access to selected data improves the availability of information, while digital interfaces enable further use of the data in geographic information systems.

The system also provides a foundation for future e-government services in mining. Planned digital processes are intended to enable mining rights holders to submit applications to the competent authority through defined workflows, including applications for exploration licences. This can simplify administrative procedures and contribute to more efficient approval processes as part of a modern digital public administration.
